Perhaps CEL got their inspiration from the single-minded commitment of one of Nigeria’s most renowned citizens.

Nigeria’s Nobel Prize Winner Combines Literature with Political Activism

Wole Soyinka is a playwright and poet, and the only Nigerian to ever win a Nobel Prize. He was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first African to be honored in that category. Soyinka studied in Nigeria and the UK, and became famous for, among other things, producing works of literature critical of governments.

Political activism has always been important in Soyinka’s literature and, in fact, he dedicated his Nobel Prize to Nelson Mandela, who was still in a South African prison at the time. He formed an anti-corruption and justice-seeking student organisation while still in college. A significant number of the hundreds of published works attributed to him deal with the evils of repressive governments. As recently as 2015, he spent election day monitoring voting irregularities.

Nigeria’s most important writer has never been afraid of speaking truth to power. Soyinka’s play performed on the day in 1960 that Nigeria celebrated its sovereignty satirized the new government and argued that it was no better than the colonial ones. He was arrested for the first time in 1964 after resigning his professorship in protest of the government’s censorship. After the 1966 military coup he was arrested again and jailed for 22 months. In Soyinka’s mind, many of the strongmen who came to power were no better than their colonial oppressors, and he has been an untiring critic of "the oppressive boot and the irrelevance of the colour of the foot that wears it,” whether in Nigeria or other countries such as Zimbabwe or Uganda.

Given that he was not supposed to have access to books, pen or paper, it is remarkable that Soyinka managed to write some significant works while in prison. He was finally forced to make a harrowing escape from the country on a motorcycle, and ended up living in the United States and France. He has held teaching positions at universities in the United States, Nigeria, and Great Britain. He finally returned to Nigeria in 1999, avoiding a death sentence in absentia during the prior dictatorship.

Soyinka once famously said that “A tiger doesn't proclaim his tigritude, he pounces.”

The list of awards that Soyinka has received is long. In addition to the Nobel Prize, he has been given four honorary doctorates, six international book awards, and three international fellowships. He has even been made a Yoruba tribal aristocrat.

Wole Soyinka has won respect and accolades because he is driven by an unswerving commitment to do his best and be true to his beliefs; to follow his calling unconditionally no matter the obstacles and challenges. Nigeria is justifiably proud to have produced a man of such integrity and commitment. It is a characteristic of the Nigerian people.

The same commitment and dedication can be found at Cyber Energys, a company which provides the most comprehensive Industrial and Environmental cleaning services available.

Inspections and Maintenance

Once materials are placed in the field, CEL provides inspection solutions that are critical in order to maintain efficiency while reducing risk and downtime. The Nigerian Upstream Oil and Gas sector is particularly sensitive to downtime due to defective drill pipe, casing, tubing, and sucker rod. To address this issue, CEL employs cutting edge technology like ultrasonic and electromagnetic techniques which deliver money saving results for its clients. Inspections are done strictly in accordance with API/ISO standards where appropriate, and with custom designed protocols in the event that transmission connections are proprietary. Inspectors are ASNT Certified Level II whenever required. On the maintenance side, CEL professionals have the capability to straighten pipe, apply world class coatings, and perform thread evaluation and mill surveillance.

The BID Committee was impressed by CEL’s extensive use of written protocols, specifications and assessment methodologies that have been widely adopted by operators, regulators and third-party inspectors. Their approach uses world class engineering techniques to provide operators with the insight and relevant information needed for responsible asset integrity management. As specialists in corrosion prevention, evaluation and remediation in marine and other challenging environments, the company has developed a reputation for quality of service, reliability, consistency and cost-effectiveness.

Another value added service provided by CEL is the provision of cars, buses, trucks and heavy duty equipment, and Escort Services. Vehicles are available with uniformed drivers, and maintenance is handled by CEL, thereby simplifying administration while bringing logistics costs under control and reducing capital investment.

Quality Starts with People

CEL recognizes that its most important asset is its people, and in addition to in house recurrent training, the company uses certified third party training facilities and organizations in South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States and the Middle East, where their people are trained in accordance with applicable regulations and project requirements. This allows the company to ensure that their staff have the necessary qualifications and safety certifications required for their roles. CEL also maintains an in-house Quality Control and Safety department which constantly monitors the knowledge certification and expertise of operational personnel, something the BID Committee considers to be of special importance.

CEL has a stated policy of zero tolerance in Quality Delivery, starting with ISO 9001 certification and continuing with strict human resources development programmes. CEL also represents top brands such as Socvalves and Pompe Cucchi. In the words of Managing Director Colins C. Uka, “We promote the highest standards of customer care and Quality, and the client is at the centre of all our business operations.”

The company also is committed to Corporate Social Responsibility by supporting SOS Children's Villages in Nigeria, a community assistance organization which supports Nigerian children and young people by providing loving homes, day care, education and vocational training in five different locations. More generally, CEL has an official policy of commitment to its neighbors and local communities, to consistently and appropriately consider the self-sufficiency, sustainability, health, safety and environment of these communities, and to conduct their business as a responsible corporate citizen. According to Mr. Uka, “we follow established procedures to gain a thorough understanding of the potential effects of CEL’s presence on the local community and the surrounding region, and we develop action plans to advance our relationships with neighboring communities. Our Human Rights Policy requires initial stakeholder and social risk analyses, consistent monitoring, periodic reassessments and regular engagement with stakeholders to address community issues. CEL engages proactively with stakeholders — including neighbors, local governments and partners with the goal of promoting positive, mutually beneficial outcomes everywhere we operate. We often partner with local, regional and international institutions that benefit families and communities by promoting public health and safety, environmental stewardship, economic development, education and cultural life.”
