Vidal Sassoon was the first celebrity hairdresser, eventually building an empire that had sales of more than $100 million per year before he sold the business in the early 1980’s.  His story is remarkable, and shows what can be achieved with hard work, creativity, and a commitment to quality.

 

Sassoon was born in 1928  into a Jewish family in west London and spent most of his early childhood in an orphanage.  He found work at a barber shop as a young adolescent during WWII, but right after the war joined a Jewish organization in England dedicated to fighting a group of fascists led by Sir Oswald Mosley, then went to the Holy Land to help Israel win its struggle for independence in 1948, leading the Daily Telegraph to later call him an "anti-fascist warrior-hairdresser."


Back in England, he apprenticed under the most famous hairdresser in the country, Raymond Bessone.  Sassoon said he never would have achieved what he did without the tutelage of Bessone.


In 1954 Sassoon opened his own salon, with the idea of revolutionizing women’s hairstyles with easy to wear and maintain haircuts.  He said that he was inspired by architectural principles of form and function, and moved away from the lacquered cuts that were popular in the 1950’s.  In short, Sassoon revolutionized haircutting by employing one of the basic tenets of Continuous Quality Improvement:  listen to your customers and give them what they want.  

 

Sassoon always saw himself as a designer and an artist, and It wasn’t long before Sassoon’s cuts appeared on magazine covers, fashion models, and famous actresses.  He was on set to cut Mia Farrow’s hair during the filming of Rosemary’s Baby and during the movie Farrow’s character says about her haircut "It's Vidal Sassoon. It's very in."  Sassoon opened salons in North America and developed a line of hair products.  His tagline “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good” was one of the most famous advertising slogans of the era.  


Ease of Maintenance, a Core Value of Quality


Throughout his career, Sassoon believed in making it easy for a woman to stay beautiful by giving her a custom hairstyle that both fit her face and was not a “daily struggle” to maintain.  He also based his designs on artistic concepts found in geometric patterns and architecture.  He called his work “Hair Design.”  The concept of Hair Design epitomizes what Quality is all about -- delivering ease of use, well thought out design, and listening to what the customer wants.  This is why, more than a half century after he became established, Vidal Sassoon is still one of only a handful of hairstylists whose names are instantly recognizable.

 

Sassoon also understood the importance of using his wealth to do good, and The Vidal Sassoon International Center was founded  in order to disseminate knowledge necessary for understanding the phenomenon of antisemitism. The Center engages in research on antisemitism throughout the ages, focusing on relations between Jews and non-Jews, particularly in situations of tension and crisis.

 

Besides the International Center, Sassoon also established the Vidal Sassoon Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to a variety of charitable, educational and cultural causes in North America, Europe and Israel.
