Dakar, the capital and largest city of Senegal, is the city in the center of a major metro area on the west coast of Africa that has a population of two and a half million. The city is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula, which juts out into the Atlantic ocean, and is surrounded on three sides by water, forming an excellent harbor. During its colonial heyday, Dakar was one of the jewels of the French empire, and one of the largest cities in Africa.

Today, Dakar may be best known globally for its association with the Dakar Rally, the biggest and most important event in endurance rally racing. This “rally-raid” began in 1978 as an annual race from Paris, France to Dakar in Senegal. In 2008, safety concerns in Mauritania caused the race to relocate to South America, but the event still retains its roots by keeping the name “Dakar.” After Senegal gained its independence in 1960, it went through decades of political upheaval and change. The economy today has settled into becoming predominantly dependent on commodities and raw materials. Agriculture, as well, plays a large role. Increasingly, due to its stability, a growing tourism sector is taking root in Senegal, where the new African Renaissance Monument, a massive bronze statue perched on a hill overlooking Dakar, is a major draw. Another source of tourism is the coastal wildlife off of West Africa, one of the most treasured marine wildlife habitats in the world. The dizzyingly diverse aquatic fauna that can be found here do not only make for a eco-tourism draw, but provide Touba Océan Decor a wonderful business opportunity.
