Russia has a rich history of aviation and space flight
Russian aviation and space technology is famous worldwide. The Soviet Union put the first satellite and the first living creature in orbit, and has been an integral part of the International space Station for years. None of these achievements would have been possible without first class aerospace education in the Soviet Union and Russia.
A Venerable University
Ufa State Aviation Technical University (USATU), located in the south central part republic of Bashkortostan, is a non-profit higher educational institution dedicated to preparing students for careers in aviation technology; space and rocket technology; automation and control; machine building and metalworking; instrument – making; electronics and mechanical engineering; applied mathematics; computer science; economics and management; and life safety. USATU is the leading and largest school in the capital city of Ufa and in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The school was established in 1932, although its roots go back into the 19th century.
Education at USATU is rigorous, and not everyone gets in. Its 38 bachelor degree programs, 30 master degree programs and 9 specialty degree programs are selective and students must be serious in order to succeed. For the ones that do, the rewards are great, as USATU graduates are highly sought out both at home and abroad for their thorough practical and theoretical training.
Quality in Everything and a Worldwide Reach
The motto of the University is “Science is the foundation of high quality education,” and the school was founded specifically with the goal of integrating science, production and education. USATU maintains its ranking as one of the top technical universities in Russia because of its commitment to continuous improvement in its systems. As a school focused on technology, science and innovation, it couldn’t be any other way.
Graduates receive continued support from their educational mentors, and the University is thoroughly integrated with leading technical enterprises through the Centre for Education, Research and Innovation (CERI) that serves as a clearinghouse for students, faculty and scientists to promote participation in social, economic, technological, educational and cultural development of the Republic of Bashkortostan. CERI is a laboratory for managing the entire process of product development from basic research all the way through delivery to the end user. This creative synergy between the academic and industrial communities makes the educational experience at USATU unique. The University also takes advantage of its relationship with the Russian Academy of Sciences in order to make a student’s time at USATU particularly valuable.
USATU is a university of global reach and influence, taking part in numerous international educational and scientific programs. The school collaborates extensively with other universities in Russia and abroad and provides grants to students to help make relationships with other schools a reality. In fact, USATU now counts among its international partners nearly 40 universities and research institutes in 17 countries. USATU is also proud to count among its student body scholars from South America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, representing 30 or more countries at any one time.
At USATU students study hard, but they also play hard. Education within the classroom is incredibly important, but it is only a part of what makes a well rounded citizen. USATU students take advantage of clubs which mount musical and theatrical performances, and clubs on campus participate in competitions where they perform very well indeed, having captured prizes in regional, national and international festivals and competitions.
Another important part of creating a well rounded citizen is social consciousness. Every year USATU students work with local orphanages, and the Student Union provides financial resources for students who come to us from less advantaged backgrounds, as well as providing aid to orphans, the disabled, and families in need.
Aeroflot has Found Success through Quality
USATU graduates are able to get jobs anywhere in the world, but many of them stay home, and many of the ones that do find careers at Aeroflot, Russia’s largest airline. Aeroflot is also one of the oldest, having been founded in 1923. Among other firsts achieved by Aeroflot is the first airline with regular jet aircraft service back in 1956.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent economic issues provided a challenge for Aeroflot. The company modernized its fleet, replacing old Soviet era aircraft with Airbus, Boeing, and other Western made planes. It spun off a portion of its fleet into regional carriers, then began to compete again on the international stage. By 2006, it had become a member of the Sky Team alliance with biggest foreign airlines in the world. And by 2015, not only had Aeroflot more than doubled passenger load in a decade, but it also had the youngest fleet in the world among the majors, had won the international prize as best air carrier in Eastern Europe four times, had a subsidiary, Pobeda ranked fourth in the world among budget airlines.
These achievements did not come by accident. Instead, they are the result of hard work, a commitment to continuous improvement, a focus on customer satisfaction, and a dedication to quality. Attention detail and passenger comfort extends even to the food and flight attendant uniforms, both of which have also won awards. As Vitaly Saveliev recently announced “We are determined to achieve new victories, more recognition….”
Because of its commitment to continuous quality improvement, Ufa State Aviation Technical University Russia has been selected to receive the BID World Quality Commitment Award for 2015 at the convention in Paris.
